I laid you down tonight with hiccups and a grin. You had been so incredibly sad on the way home. With good reason - we had kept you up over an hour past your bedtime, and though you were having lots of fun, you were also getting very worn out. Daddy and I were coming home in different cars and your screams kept me company most of the way home.
Oh dear, now you are in your crib, growling. You are such a funny girl.
Once we got home I hurried to nurse you. This immediately calms and comforts you when you are in distress. We sat in the dark together. You settled down, I breathed more slowly. We both relaxed. Afterwards, you were like putty in my arms for a few minutes. But soon, very soon, you got your milk high. After laying your sleepy body on the changing table to get you in your PJs and a fresh diaper, your giggles started right up. You were all-of-the-sudden playful and silly, just provoking me to tickle your thighs and poke your belly to coax more adorable laughs out of your sweet mouth. It was precious and made me warm and joyful from the depths of my heart, all the way up to my happy eyes.
By the time your nightshirt was on and your giggles began to die down, you had given yourself the hiccups. As I rolled you out of my arms into bed, you did your typical half-turn to your side, pulling your legs up to make an L-shape with your body, and wrapping your arms tightly around your soft golden bear. I covered your body up with a blanket as you breathed out a half-giggle, half-sigh, and then crept to the door in rhythm with your hiccups.
These moments make my life so perfect, baby girl. I love you.
